- Humpback whales migrate to Tonga every year to mate, give birth and nurse their baby. This year we were very fortunate to swim with several pair of mothers and calves. In this encounter the mother regularly pushed her small calf towards the surface of the water. This is common behaviour with young babies when the mothers support them on their nose and help them breath. Considering that humpback whales have nearly been driven to extinction by whaling, and that the Tongan humpback population is still classified as endangered, it is a privilege to see a mother with her offspring.
