I was night diving at the Secret Bay site in Anilao, Batangas, the Philippines. I was getting rather disappointed as the visibility was bad and the usual bunch of amusing critters (octopi, cuttlefish, etc.) were not around. Towards the end of the dive, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted what looked like a length of corrugated pipe popping out of the sand. It turned out to be a Bobbitt worm feeding!
Now since my own nickname is "Bobbit," I thought it might be fate that created this last minute encounter with my eponymously named underwater friend :-)
On another dive, at the Kirby's Rock site, also in Anilao, we spotted this cute little Flamboyant cuttlefish. This colorful critter mesmerizes his prey with his changing colors and then uses his "harpoon" to skewer his meal! Nice! :-)
Thanks to my DM/spotter, Kim Manzano for finding these guys! Kim also had to light the Bobbitt worm from a distance using his torch, as "Mr. Bobbitt" refused to come out of his burrow when my dive lights were turned on. I guess, unlike me, he is a shy eater! :-)
